La-Z-Boy Sofa Cushion Options: A Simple Comparison
La-Z-Boy Southeast | September 16, 2026

La-Z-Boy offers three seat cushion options: the standard Comfort Core, the softer Down Comfort, and the firmer Comfort Core with Contour. Each one changes how your sofa feels the moment you sit down. The Comfort Core gives you a balanced, everyday sit. The Down Comfort adds a plush, sink-in feel. The Comfort Core with Contour delivers the firmest, most supportive sit of the three. Below, we break down how each cushion is built and who it suits. That way, you can picture the difference before you ever reach the showroom.
Start with the standard: the Comfort Core cushion
The Comfort Core is our standard seat cushion, and it comes standard on all of our sleeper sofas and stationary sofas. It is built from seven layers, and each layer plays a part in how the seat supports you. What makes it feel different from a single slab of foam is the way it is zoned. In other words, the cushion is not the same firmness all the way through.
The back two-thirds of the cushion uses an ultra-high-resilient core foam. That firmer zone gives you the stability you want while you sit. The front third, however, is intentionally less resilient. It offers less resistance right where the edge of the seat meets the back of your knees. As a result, the front of the cushion does not press into your legs or pinch circulation during a long evening on the couch. Additionally, these cushions are reversible on all of our fabric selections, so you can flip them to even out wear over time.
Want a softer landing? The Down Comfort cushion
If you love the feeling of sinking into your seat, the Down Comfort cushion is built for you. It layers a plush top over a supportive base, so the softness never comes at the cost of structure. Higher-density foam wraps the edging to hold the cushion’s shape. Inside, an inner layer of individually wrapped coils does the supporting work, much like a quality mattress.
The top and bottom layers are where the magic happens. Both hold a blend of down and feather, and that blend is what gives you the soft, cloud-like sit. Because loose feathers could otherwise poke through, the down and feather sit inside a protective zippered pouch. That pouch uses a tight down ticking, which keeps the fill contained and keeps stray quills away from you. In short, you get the plush feel without the prickly downside.
Prefer more structure? The Comfort Core with Contour cushion
The Comfort Core with Contour is the firmest sit of the three, and it is made for anyone who wants extra back support. It starts from the same foundation as our standard Comfort Core. On top of that, it adds one more layer that changes the whole feel. This top layer is a blue, medium-density foam that behaves like memory foam — but with a twist.
Unlike a typical memory foam, this layer springs back faster, so you do not feel stuck in the seat when you shift. Meanwhile, it is temperature neutral, which means it will not make you feel warmer or cooler as the day goes on. That combination gives you the body-contouring support of memory foam without the heat or the slow, sinking lag. For a firmer, more structured seat, this is the cushion to try.
How the three cushions compare
Sometimes the easiest way to see the difference is side by side. Here is how the three cushion options stack up on feel, how they are built, who they suit best, and the warranty each one carries.
| Comfort Core (standard) | Down Comfort (plush) | Comfort Core with Contour (firm) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Balanced, everyday sit | Soft, plush, sink-in | Firm and structured |
| How it’s built | Seven layers; zoned foam — firmer back two-thirds, softer front third | Wrapped-coil core, firm foam edging, down-and-feather top and bottom in a zippered pouch | Standard Comfort Core base plus a memory-like, temperature-neutral top layer |
| Best for | A dependable all-around sit with knee-friendly seat edge | Anyone who loves to sink in and relax | Anyone who wants extra back support and a firmer seat |
| Reversible | Yes, on all fabric selections | — | — |
| Warranty | 3 years | 5 years | 5 years |
How the warranties compare
The cushion you choose also affects your coverage. The standard Comfort Core cushion comes with a three-year warranty. Upgrading to the plush Down Comfort cushion raises that coverage to five years. The firm Comfort Core with Contour carries the same five-year warranty. In other words, both upgrade cushions extend your protection, not just your comfort.
The best way to choose is to sit
Reading about foam and coils gets you part of the way. Still, comfort is personal, and the only real test is how a cushion feels under you. Each of these three options is engineered by La-Z-Boy to hold up over years of everyday use. That said, one will simply feel more like home than the others. So come on down to the showroom, have a seat, and see which cushion feels best to you.
