If you picture a La-Z-Boy recliner in your head, you’re probably picturing something close to the Maverick. High biscuit back, sloping padded arms, a seat you sink into rather than perch on.

It has been a staple of the lineup for years. Because it comes in four different base types, though, “the Maverick” isn’t really one chair. It’s four.

What the Maverick Actually Is

The seat is the part that matters most. La-Z-Boy builds the Maverick on a chaise bucket seat, so the seat and footrest form one continuous surface. As a result, there’s no gap behind your knees when you’re reclined.

The back is biscuit-style — segmented tufting that adds structure without the formality of a button-tufted chair. Sloping padded arms then finish the shape.

It’s a plush chair rather than a firm one. In fact, that’s the main thing separating the Maverick from La-Z-Boy’s more architectural recliners.

La-Z-Boy scales the Maverick for taller frames, roughly 5’10” to 6’2″. The 22″ seat depth suits that range well. Shorter sitters, meanwhile, often prefer a mid-scale chair instead.

Note the 67″ reclined depth. That’s the number to measure against, not the 39″ upright depth.

Four Bases, Four Different Chairs

This is where showroom shopping gets confusing, so here’s the plain version:

Rocking recliner — rocks when the footrest is down, reclines when it’s up. The classic. Needs about 12″ of wall clearance.
Wall recliner — slides forward as it opens instead of tipping back. Needs only about 7″ of clearance.
Gliding recliner — glides on a smooth front-to-back track rather than rocking in an arc.
Power rocking recliner — button-operated recline with a rocking base underneath.

What Power Adds

The power Mavericks do more than swap a handle for a button. Each one reclines the back and raises the legrest independently. As a result, you’re not locked into preset angles.

They also include a built-in USB charging port, a wireless remote, and two memory positions. The top version then adds power lumbar support on top of a power headrest.

The headrest is the upgrade people underestimate. Without it, reclining pushes your head forward. That said, it’s also where the price starts climbing.

The Patented Features

Who Should Buy It — and Who Shouldn’t

The Maverick suits you if you want a traditional, plush recliner and you’re on the taller side. It’s a living-room chair and a den chair, not a statement piece.

However, it isn’t for every room. Petite sitters will find the seat deep and the back tall. If you want something that reads contemporary, La-Z-Boy’s slimmer profiles will serve you better. And if clearance is genuinely tight, check the wall version before ruling the chair out.
