There’s a new piece on the La-Z-Boy floor worth a closer look: the Canadel Gourmet Kitchen Island. La-Z-Boy isn’t best known for kitchen islands. La-Z-Boy sources its dining offerings through Canadel, and they usually sit alongside the brand’s signature upholstery. However, this island makes a strong case for spending time in that corner of the showroom.

Who is Canadel?

Canadel is a Canadian furniture maker based in Louiseville, Québec. Dining furniture is its specialty: tables, chairs, stools, benches, buffets, and islands. It also makes a smaller line of living room pieces, such as coffee and console tables.

Canadel builds its furniture from solid wood, primarily birch and beech. Both are hardwoods known for tight, concentric grain rings. As a result, the wood is denser and more stable — good news for something that will see decades of chopping, leaning, and pulled-out chairs.

What’s built into this Canadel Gourmet Kitchen Island?

The Gourmet Island (model 4836) measures 48 inches wide, 21 inches deep, and 36 inches tall in its standard footprint. With the optional drop-leaf extension pulled out, it expands to 33 inches deep. That means it can flex between everyday prep space and a quick breakfast spot.

The top is a genuine butcher block cutting surface. One version includes a recessed cutout that drops into a removable steel collection pan. That’s the kind of setup you’d find in a professional kitchen. As a result, scraps go straight into the pan instead of onto the counter.

Storage is where it earns its keep. Six drawers include a dedicated knife block drawer, a utensil divider for silverware, one deep drawer, and additional standard drawers. Flanking the sides are a spice rack and a magazine rack that fits cookbooks or recipe cards.

Every drawer closes softly, and the unit rolls on locking casters. That said, you can also special-order it as a stationary piece if you’d rather it stay put. Meanwhile, the back bar lowers so the island can slide flush against a wall when needed.

Customization is the whole point of Canadel

Customization built Canadel’s reputation, much the way configurable upholstery built La-Z-Boy’s. You’re specifying a piece, not just picking a floor model. The Gourmet collection offers roughly 20 wood tones and a choice of matte or antique finish. Most lean toward traditional wood stains, such as oak, pecan, cherry, and chestnut washes, but there are also a few bolder options, including Royal Blue and a sage-toned green called Rosemary. The sage is a favorite of many of our La-Z-Boy consultants.

The top of the kitchen island is configurable too: full butcher block with or without the recessed steel-pan cutout, or a half-and-half design with butcher block on one side and a steel cutting surface on the other. You can customize stools too, choosing wood or upholstered seats, backs, and different lip details along the seat edge.

Canadel Gourmet Island: Worth a look

This gourmet kitchen island is a serious piece of infrastructure — cutting surface, storage, prep space — but because of how Canadel builds it, it can also match a full dining set or stand on its own.
