The backrest is one of the first things you notice on a sofa and one of the biggest drivers of how it feels to sit in. Most styles fall into three families: tufted back, pillow back, and tight back. Here’s how they differ so you can pick the one that fits your room and your comfort.
What Is A Tufted Back?
A tufted back has its upholstery pulled to the frame with evenly spaced buttons, creating a pattern of soft indentations.
Our Gemma Chair, pictured above, is a perfect example of a tufted back chair.
The look is tailored and a little dressy, with a distinct design element that reads well in traditional, contemporary, and modern rooms alike. There’s a practical upside too: the tufting holds the cushions in place, so you’re not constantly fluffing them.
What Is A Pillow Back Sofa?
A pillow back is exactly what it sounds like: individual pillows support your back instead of fixed cushions.
A perfect example of a pillow back sofa is our Collins, pictured below.
Those pillows come in three configurations:
- Fully attached
- Semi-attached
- Unattached
The result is a relaxed, classic look that’s comfortable and suits most homes. Just know that the softer the pillows, the more occasional fluffing they’ll want.
What Is A Tight Back Sofa?
On a tight back, the cushioning is fully integrated into the backrest, so there are no loose pillows or cushions at all.
