We recently sat down with La-Z-Boy Sales Consultant, Melissa S. who works in our Lexington, South Carolina gallery.

In this Q&A session, we discuss her impressive qualifications, her journey at La-Z-Boy Southeast, and what she loves most about helping our customers create their perfect home environments.

How long have you worked with La-Z-Boy Southeast and what is your career background?

I have 14 years of experience working in the furniture industry and I’ve worked at La-Z-Boy Southeast for the past 5 years.

I have an Interior Design Certificate from Midlands Technical College and a Bachelor of HR Management and Workforce Education and Development from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

I’m also a US Navy Veteran, where I served on the USS Stennis and USS Nimitz.

Why do you like working at La-Z-Boy Southeast?

No day is the same. Every person who I greet has an individual need and I get to be the one to create unique solutions that will help bring their visions to life.

It makes my job both challenging and exciting. I’m not just selling the same furniture day in and day out.

What’s your favorite part of the in-home design process?

My favorite part of the process is showing the client their before and after transformation.

It’s exciting seeing everything come together for them. They have that “wow” moment where they realize that they told me what they wanted but couldn’t exactly visualize it and I am able to do that for them.

What is your favorite piece of furniture to sell?

It may sound cliché, but I really don’t have just one favorite piece of furniture to sell.

The beauty of our furniture is that every piece is highly customizable, offering endless combinations of fabrics, colors, and styles. This means I get to help clients create something unique every single time.

Even after five years and countless projects, I still get excited when I see a new combination come together. It’s like being part of a creative process that never gets old.

What are some of your favorite design projects that you have worked on?

A client came to us wanting an African Safari Man cave.

He has memorabilia from various hunting excursions that he wanted to incorporate into the décor. This included a zebra and giraffe hide that were made into rugs. He also had an array of animal mounts and memorabilia on display from his excursions.

We incorporated comfortable furniture that matched the theme of this room while allowing his collection to really shine. I remember explaining the configuration of the furniture and why we didn’t choose a different layout because “we don’t want to cover up the giraffe”. That was definitely a first in my career!

I have a customer who I’ve had the pleasure of working with for over 5 years and have styled multiple rooms in her home.

By spending time understanding her style, she comes to me for advice and new ideas. She has a beautiful home and already had a base of beautiful pieces of furniture and artwork. She trusted that I wouldn’t be recommending that we eliminate any pieces but work around her space.

We started with customizing furniture for her family room, but throughout the years, we’ve updated four additional rooms and a foyer in her home.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy painting, DIY home improvement projects, traveling, cooking, and, of course, spending time with my 4 fur babies.

What do you wish every customer knew before shopping for furniture?

I always recommend starting shopping earlier than you think you’ll need to.

You need patience for customized furniture. It’s made just for you and not sitting in stock. You have to keep custom order and delivery timelines in mind when shopping. But it’s worth it to get exactly what you want.

Our design process isn’t scary. I’m not pushing my style on you or making you replace everything in your home. My job is to work within your space and with your things to make the room come together. If you have antiques or pieces that you already love, great! We’ll make sure to incorporate them into your space.

Think of me more as your personal shopper, not just a La-Z-Boy sales consultant. If something isn’t right for you, I’m here to help, not push you to buy.
